Home Remedies for Infants, Toddlers, and Children

  • Train your child by motivating and encouraging them for Toilet. It is important to have a regular toilet routine. For older children, ask them to sit for 10 minutes on the toilet once a day, especially within 30 minutes after a meal – breakfast or dinner.
  • Avoid baby foods that are higher in cheese or those with rice cereal. These formulas tend to constipate your baby.
  • Gently massage the stomach of your baby, in a clockwise direction with the help of your fingertips. Massage around the naval as well, in an outward, spherical motion. It will eradicate the tension out of your baby’s tummy and give him/her relief from the symptoms of constipation.
  • Mix ½ teaspoon of sugar in an ounce of water. Give this solution to your baby thrice a day before feeding him/her formula food. Instead of white sugar, it is recommended to use brown sugar for preparing this solution.
  • Apply a water-based lubricant to your baby’s anus. It will lubricate the excretory passage, thus, decreasing the discomfort.
  • Castor is the most commonly used remedy for relieving constipation in kids. Take a betel leaf and dip its stalk in castor oil. Introduce it in the rectum of the baby. If your child is more than 2 years old, give a mixture of castor oil (1 teaspoon) in a glass of milk. Adjust the dose as per the age of the child.

Home Remedies for Adults

  • Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fiber. Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole-grain bread.
  • Drink 1 1/2 to 2 quarts of water and other fluids a day (with the consult of doctor). Avoid caffeine as it can be dehydrating in most of the cases.
  • Mix flax seeds in your breakfast cereal every morning or add them to warm water and drink it early in the morning. 
  • Soak a few dates in milk, squash it to make a paste and take it with milk for a week to relieve constipation.
  • Regular physical exercise or yoga is a must for proper bowel movements
  • Taking a teaspoon of ghee mixed in a glass of hot milk before going to bed acts as a good remedy for constipation.
  • Drinking half a cup of cabbage juice twice daily may help relieve constipation.
  • Drink half a glass of spinach juice mixed with half a glass of water twice daily for two to three days, and find relief even from severe constipation.

One can go for 7 days course at home

Day 1:- Raisins (kishmish)- are packed with fiber and act as great natural laxatives. This remedy also works wonders for pregnant women, without the side-effects of medication.

Day 2:- Prunes  (सूखा आलूबुखारा) it has a natural, laxative effect in the body, are also high in disease-fighting antioxidants and have both insoluble and soluble fiber.

Day 3:- Mix flax seeds in your breakfast cereal every morning or add them to warm water and drink it early in the morning.

Day 4:- Cabbage:- Drinking half a cup of cabbage juice twice in a day.

Day 5:- Spinach - Drink half a glass of spinach juice mixed with half a glass of water twice in a day.

Day 6:- Castor Oil If you still feel constipated on day 6th with doctors permission try Castor oil as it has a compound that when digested stimulates the small and large intestines. Swallow one to two teaspoons quickly on an empty stomach and give it eight hours to work its magic.

Lemon: Now as you have just cleaned your system so on last 7th day first have a good walk in park and have Lemon (nimbu) juice It acts as a cleansing agent for the intestines, the salt content helps in quick and easy passage of stool. This juice also is a great way to detox your body. All you need to do is mix one teaspoon of lemon juice in a glass of warm water with a pinch of salt to the solution.
